
Weitzman ECHO Diabetes and Weight Management 2025-2026 (April 28, 2026)
Program Information
This ECHO program meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month from 11am-12pm PT / 2-3pm ET starting on October 28th, 2025.
Weitzman ECHO Diabetes and Weight Management connects primary care providers, behavioral health providers, and care team members with a multidisciplinary team of experts and specialists in type 2 diabetes and weight management. At each session, subject-matter experts provide guidance to address patients' complex health needs related to type 2 diabetes with or without obesity to better assess, treat, and care for patients.
This ECHO is a no-cost 18-session series that uses twice-monthly videoconferencing sessions to improve quality of care and clinical outcomes for underserved patients. Providers and care team members working in primary care settings (especially FQHCs and other safety net settings) are encouraged to join. CME, CNE, CPE, and CEU credits will be provided for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, registered dietitians, and pharmacists, among others, by Moses/Weitzman Health System Inc., an accredited provider through Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education.

This activity is appropriate for the following audiences:
- Primary care providers (e.g., MDs, DOs, NPs, PAs)
- Behavioral health providers (e.g., Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, Therapists)
- Nurses
- Registered Dietitians
- Pharmacists
- Other members of the care team
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to do the following:
- Facilitate conversations with people with type 2 diabetes and/or obesity using language that promotes respect, reduces bias, and develops trust.
- Interpret results from validated screening tools relevant to type 2 diabetes and obesity to address comorbidities and psychological, behavioral, and social factors.
- Individualize health-related behavior modifications to effectively manage type 2 diabetes and/or obesity in collaboration with people seeking care.
- Apply evidence-based strategies, including pharmacological and surgical interventions, based on available treatment options.
- Adjust treatment approaches for people with type 2 diabetes and/or obesity experiencing comorbidities and complications.
- Manage diabetes in special populations, such as adolescents and older adults, based on their unique needs and challenges.

Faculty
Elizabeth A. Beverly, PhD is a Full Professor of Primary Care at Ohio University and the Ralph S. Licklider, D.O. Endowed Professor in Behavioral Diabetes. A nationally recognized expert, she leads research on the psychosocial aspects of diabetes, rural health disparities, and healthcare professional education. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Joslin Diabetes Center and Harvard Medical School and holds a PhD in Biobehavioral Health from The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Beverly has served as Principal Investigator on 35 external research grants focused on diabetes quality improvement, virtual reality training, and health equity in Appalachian communities. She co-directs the Southeastern Ohio Regional Quality Improvement Hub and the NIH-funded Diabetes Institute Summer Interprofessional Research Experience (DISIRE) for Undergraduates. She has authored over 130 peer-reviewed publications and is known for advancing team-based care and translating research into real-world solutions.
Mandeep Brar, MD is a board certified Endocrinologist with extensive experience in the management of complex endocrine disorders. After finishing her residency in Los Angeles, California she pursued her fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at the University of Colorado, Denver under the mentorship of renowned faculty such as Dr. Chester E. Ridgeway and Dr. Robert Eckel. After spending time on bench research in Colorado, Dr. Brar shifted her focus to develop clinical protocols for the management of diabetes and served as medical director at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health diabetes center in the greater Seattle area. Dr. Brar moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 2014 to take over Tenet Healths' Abrazo Diabetes Care Centers. During the past seven years, Dr. Brar has focused on population health interventions for management of diabetes and training the next generation of providers.
Kara Lewis, PharmD, AAHIVP is a clinical pharmacist leader at Community Health Center, Inc. Dr. Lewis has experienced working directly with patients in past roles including CVS Pharmacy and a Walgreens Pharmacy embedded within Community Health Center, Inc. Dr. Lewis provides significant support to providers on Project ECHO Key Populations including discussions on medication adherence and recognizing drug-drug interactions. Dr. Lewis has served on the Project ECHO Key Populations faculty since 2017.
Charlotte McIntyre, RDN is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist at El Rio Health Center in Tucson, Arizona. She works to help patients understand how nutrition and lifestyle can improve their overall health through Motivational Interviewing and positive behavior change. She not only looks at what people eat, but focuses on helping build a positive relationship with food and movement through a collaborative and individualized approach. Charlotte tries to help people build a strong nutritional foundation through collaborating with patients/clients on exploring ideas and techniques to help achieve health goals from a place of flexibility, autonomy, and personal knowledge. She uses a food and body positive approach and wants to help those who suffer with body image issues, disordered eating, and a turbulent relationship with food. She helps build skills from an anti-diet and Healthy at Every Size approach which provides positive and productive outcomes for a range of nutrition support needs.
Joy Mockbee, MD, MPH is a family physician and medical director at El Rio Health in Tucson, Arizona, where she has been caring for her patient panel for 25 years and continues to be energized by the innovation and mission of community health centers. She attended medical school at the University of Arizona and completed a Master of Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, followed by a Family Medicine residency at Ventura County Medical Center. She then returned home to Tucson, Arizona and has been a part of the community health center movement ever since. Responding to a request by El Rio Health staff and patients, Dr. Mockbee became interested in medical weight management and pursued board certification through the American Board of Obesity Medicine in 2015. Since that time, she has collaborated with a multidisciplinary team to develop El Rio's Weight Management programs for adults and children and to promote the practice of medical weight management by primary care clinicians throughout the health system.
