Prescription for Play
Program Information
A program delivered by primary care providers during routine wellness exams to promote play in children 18-36 months. The program offers free LEGO® DUPLO® bricks for care teams to distribute to these patients and their caregivers. The bricks and related educational material are used as prompts to engage caregivers around the benefits of play for development of emotional, cognitive, creative, social, and physical skills.
Prescription for Play is provided to you as a partnership of the Weitzman Institute, the innovation and research arm of Moses/Weitzman Health System, Inc., and the LEGO Foundation.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to do the following:
- Recognize the importance of play for infants and toddlers on early sensory, brain, social, and artistic development is evident in a number of studies. Play also contributes to the formation of nurturing relationships between parent and child
- Develop and implement new approaches to educating primary pediatric providers about the importance of play, while embedding promotion of play between parent/caregiver and child into the structure of the routine pediatric wellness exam
- Implement an intervention called “Prescription for Play” that will guide health centers across the country to embed the intervention into routine clinical practice
Faculty
Dr. Ho-Choong Chang is the Chief of Pediatrics of Community Health Center, Inc., the state’s largest Federally Qualified Health center providing care to over 145,000 medically underserved patients, of which approximately one third are children. In this role, Dr. Chang oversees the delivery of high quality, evidence-based health care to our pediatric population. With an emphasis on integrated, team-based care, Dr. Chang collaborates closely with the Chief Medical Officer and the chiefs of Behavioral Health, Dentistry, and Nursing to coordinate multi-disciplinary pediatric focused care. Dr. Chang also serves as the On Site Medical Director of Connecticut Pediatrics @ CHC in Hartford as well as a clinical preceptor in our pediatric APRN residency program.
Dr. Chang earned his undergraduate degree in psychobiology at Yale College. Prior to entering medical school, Dr. Chang served in the first Teach For America corps and taught science to eight graders in Brooklyn, NY, where he was awarded the school’s Teacher of the Year Award in his first year. He received his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and completed his pediatrics residency at the University of Washington, Seattle Children’s Hospital. With over two decades of experience, Dr. Chang has cared for children in a number of roles including pediatric hospitalist, urgent care physician, and primary care provider. He was voted Philadelphia Magazine’s Top Doctors in Pediatrics in 2018 and 2019. He was also voted Inside New Jersey Magazine’s, Top Doctors for Children’s Health in 2015 to 2018.
