Webinar Series for Ohio: Onboarding & Ongoing Peer Supporter Supervision (May 21, 2024)

Program Information

This activity meets May 21, 2024, and June 18, 2024, from 12pm-1pm ET.

This webinar series aims to connect supervisors of Certified Peer Supporters with experienced mentors. It equips supervisors with the skills needed to create a supportive organizational environment for peers in the workplace, while also providing mentorship opportunities specifically for peer supporters. The first webinar in this 2-part series will go into depth about how to mentor peer supporters in routine check-ins to maximize their assets and address challenges to develop PRSs' skills in the workplace. The second webinar will cover how organizations should adapt to incorporate the peer suppporter role through advocacy, training, and upskilling.

Offered in partnership with the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, this webinar series is free for Peer Supporter Supervisors in Ohio. The faculty leading these sessions are experienced peer recovery supporter supervisors, offering invaluable insights and guidance. Join us for an engaging 45-minute presentation followed by a 15-minute Q&A session, scheduled from 12-1pm on Tuesday, May 21st and Tuesday, June 18th.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for supervisors of Certified Peer Supporters. Supervisors with varying credentials and roles are welcome including: 

  • Certified Peer Supporters*
  • Members of the clinical team such as clinical social workers, physicians, and nurses, among others**

*Continuing education (CE) units will be provided to participating Certified Peer Recovery Supporters, Youth Peer Supporters, and Family Peer Supporters in compliance with Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services recertification requirements.

**CME and CE credits will be provided for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and clinical social workers, among others, by Moses/Weitzman Health System, an accredited provider through Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to do the following:

  1. Enhance mentoring strategies to advance the Peer Recovery Supporter's individual strengths to maximize potential and better navigate workplace challenges. 
  2. Support Peer Recovery Supporters skills development in effective documentation, trauma informed care, communication, time management and boundary setting to reduce burnout. 
  3. Adapt the organizational environment to ensure the organization is ready to support and incorporate the Peer Recovery Supporter role, 
  4. Articulate the responsibilities and the value of the Peer Recovery Supporter to advocate for the role to colleagues throughout the work environment.

https://education.weitzmaninstitute.org/sites/default/files/media/2023-12/bell_0.pngJody Bell, CPRS, CDCA is an Ohio Peer Recovery Supporter, Peer Educator, and Peer Advocate and has dedicated herself to advocating for the support and empowerment of individuals challenged with Substance Use Disorder and Mental Illness in various Recovery Oriented Systems Of Care for over 20 years.  Jody served 16 years for NAMI Ohio Peer-To-Peer Curriculum State Trainer, OhioMHAS Peer Recovery Supporter Certification and Co-Facilitator.  Jody participated on the Integrated Care Technical Assistance and Consultation Team (TACT) as the Peer Recovery Supporter Consultant and Trainer for Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) Best Practices In Schizophrenia Treatment (BeST Center), creating opportunities for pre-work force professionals (Project ECHO ) and their counterparts to work together using guiding principles for interprofessional team-based models.  She also has her own private practice at OhioMHAS Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare as the Peer Recovery Supporter/Educator since 2017. Jody has received achievement awards from NAMI Greater Cleveland the Eugene Bruno Memorial Organizational Award for Peer Support Services for the Year in 2011, ADAMHS Board of Cuyahoga County Peer Advocate & Support Award in 2010, ADAMHS Board Annual Meeting Consumer/Client Involvement Award in 2009, and the Roads to Recovery Plenary Presenter in 2009.

Samantha Jackson, LPCC-S, is a Licensed Therapist and Ohio Peer Support Supervisor devoted to empowering individuals navigating mental health and substance use recovery. With degrees in Psychology and Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Samantha champions innovative solutions in behavioral health. She played a pivotal role in establishing Akron’s first residential treatment facility for Women with Children and presently serves as the Director of Adult Intensive and Supportive Services at Ravenwood Health. Samantha's initiatives, including Peer Support Services and Recovery Housing, reflect her commitment to fostering inclusive and impactful support systems. Samantha's recent endeavor at Ravenwood, the John Murray Clubhouse, further elevates resources and inclusion for individuals on their recovery journey. Additionally, Samantha provides therapy to youth and adults at Hope and Wellness, enriching her comprehensive approach to client care. Samantha's leadership and compassion exemplify her dedication to improving behavioral health outcomes for all.
