Recognizing Microaggressions and their Damaging Effects

Module Information

Microaggressions are subtle but offensive comments or actions directed at a member of a marginalized group. They may be unintentional or intentional and can influence access to resources and opportunities and contribute to the disparities faced by marginalized groups.

This module begins by differentiating between the different categories of microaggressions, which are microassaults, microinsults, and microinvalidations. Different types of microaggressions within those categories are then discussed. The module concludes with indirect and direct strategies to mitigate the effects of microaggressions.

This module includes real life examples and every effort has been made to represent as many marginalized groups as possible. The goal of the module is to provide learners with a new perspective and the confidence to apply best practices to interrupt microaggressions in the workplace and in everyday life.

Module Length

This module takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.

Target Audience

This module is appropriate for all clinical and non-clinical team members.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this module, learners should be able to do the following:

  1. Differentiate between a microassault, microinsult, and microinvalidation
  2. Describe the intent of the individual who committed a microaggression and the impact on the individual or community on the receiving end of a microaggression
  3. Apply direct and indirect strategies to mitigate the effects of a microaggression
