Betting on Health: Problem Gambling in Illinois & The Physician’s Role in Screening and Early Intervention (July 14, 2026)

Program Information

This session will explore the prevalence and clinical presentation of problem gambling in Illinois, its intersection with mental health, substance use, and chronic disease management, and the downstream impacts on patients and families. Participants will gain practical knowledge of validated screening tools, brief intervention strategies, and referral pathways specific to Illinois resources.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to do the following:

  • Name the physical and mental health consequences of gambling disorder as it impacts a primary care population.
  • Plan on implementing validated screening tools to identify risky gambling behaviors in a primary care population.
  • Apply brief motivational interviewing techniques to discuss ways to reduce risky gambling behavior with patients.
  • Manage and refer patients with gambling problems to gambling prevention and treatment specialists in Illinois.
