CHC SBHC Behavioral Health Kick-Off 2026: Breakout Two

Session Information

Session 1: Understanding OCD and Exposure and Response Prevention

Meredith Hettler

OCD & ERP- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic, long-lasting mental health disorder characterized by uncontrollable, recurring thoughts (obsessions) and/or behaviors (compulsions) that a person feels driven to repeat, typically taking up more than an hour a day. These symptoms cause significant distress and interfere with daily life, often involving themes of contamination, fear of harm, or a need for symmetry. OCD is not merely being "neat" or "perfectionistic." It is a serious mental health condition, not a personality quirk. People with OCD often know their thoughts are irrational but cannot stop them. While chronic, OCD is treatable. Throughout this training, you will be introduced to the YBOC which is the assessment as to how to identify OCD in your clients. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the gold standard for treatment for individuals with OCD. ERP involves voluntarily exposing oneself to feared thoughts or situations (exposure) and breaking the cycle of ritualizing by choosing not to engage in compulsive behaviors (response prevention). Throughout this training, you will be introduced to the YBOC which is the assessment as to how to identify OCD in your clients.

Session 2: Building Strong School Partnerships as a School-Based Clinician

Elizabeth Connors, PhD

This breakout session will include core components of high quality, comprehensive school mental health using the established national definition and performance measures on The SHAPE System (www.theshapesystem.com ) which Dr. Connors is a co-developer of. Best practices, resources and practical tools to improve school-community partnership will be drawn from the Teaming Domain of the School Mental Health Quality Assessment, developed by the University of Maryland National Center for School Mental Health, where Dr. Connors is Adjunct Faculty and the Director of Quality Improvement. Community-partnered clinicians employed by CHC will learn and discuss concrete ways to strengthen their collaborative relationships and embeddedness at their school site(s) to facilitate efficient and effective workflows as school mental health professionals.

Session 3: Eating Disorders 101

Brooke Lombardo

Eating disorders are among the most serious mental health conditions, with one individual dying approximately every 52 minutes as a result. Eating Disorders 101 will examine the increasing prevalence of these conditions across the United States, affecting individuals of all ages and genders. This presentation will explore the impact of artificial intelligence, news media, social media, and co-occurring mental health conditions on the development and maintenance of disordered eating behaviors. Participants will gain an enhanced understanding of the underlying science, common symptoms, and evidence-based treatment approaches. Additionally, the session will highlight available programs and resources designed to support individuals experiencing eating disorders.
