The Geriatric Clinical Decision Masterclass™

Program Information

The Geriatric Clinical Decision Masterclass™ is a practical continuing education program designed to help nurse practitioners confidently evaluate and manage medically complex older adults. Participants will learn to apply the FCMSG framework—Function, Cognition, Medications, Syndromes versus Disease, and Goals of Care—to organize clinical information, recognize atypical presentations, identify medication-related concerns, and prioritize interventions that reflect what matters most to the patient.

Through evidence-based instruction and realistic case studies, this program strengthens clinical reasoning in patients with multimorbidity, frailty, polypharmacy, cognitive changes, and geriatric syndromes. Participants will leave with a structured, repeatable approach that supports safer decision-making, individualized care planning, deprescribing, and clear, defensible clinical documentation across outpatient, long-term care, PACE, and home-based settings.

Target Audience

This activity is appropriate for the following audiences:

  • Nurse Practitioners

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to do the following:

  • Apply the FCMSG framework to systematically assess function, cognition, medications, geriatric syndromes, and goals of care in complex older adults.
  • Differentiate atypical disease presentations, medication-related symptoms, and geriatric syndromes using clinical findings and patient history.
  • Identify high-risk or potentially inappropriate medications and develop an individualized deprescribing plan using the STOP framework. Formulate prioritized, goal-concordant care plans that promote patient safety, function, and quality of life.
  • Document geriatric clinical reasoning, risk–benefit decisions, and interdisciplinary care recommendations in a clear and defensible manner.
