Alex Baker, PsyD
I graduated with my BA in psychology from California State University Chico in 2011 and began working as a youth volunteer leader, behavioral coach, and mental health counselor for adolescents in residential treatment. These opportunities gave me a lot of hands on experience in crisis management, autism, and supporting individuals with trauma.
I returned to graduate school in 2014 and completed my joint MA/PsyD through the University of Hartford’s GIPP program, with an emphasis on child/adolescent psychology. I graduated in 2018 after successfully defending my dissertation on “Micromorality Development in College Students: The Impact of Subjective Socioeconomic Status, Parenting Style, and Religion.” Throughout my training, I had opportunities to work in therapeutic day schools, DBT-based residential treatment, state trooper evaluations, and outpatient neuropsychological testing. This included designing, implementing, evaluating, and training clinicians to facilitate a therapy group on moral development and social justice for adolescents in RTC care.
In 2019, I began supervising doctoral trainees and social workers on DBT as well as psychological testing. After moving to MA in 2022, I provided pediatric neuropsychological assessments for Salem Hospital as well as working with a group practice providing individual and family therapy. Currently, I serve as the lead Assessment Psychologist and coordinator of pediatric inpatient testing with CHA’s Somerville Hospital. Additionally, I contribute written chapters for texts on integrating psychology with popular video games.
My clinical and research interests include Autism (assessment and treatment), psychological testing, Rorschach, DBT, parent coaching, developmental trauma, and incorporating dungeons & dragons as well as video game interests into clinical work. I also enjoy working within systems-related issues, including addressing efficiency, relevance, and direct feedback that avoids convoluted communication. Working with doctoral trainees and providing didactic trainings is one of the highlights of my career and I hope to contribute to the growing energy and passion that new psychologists model for us.
