Bridging Science and Community: Collaborative Approaches to Mental Health Promotion – The Filipino Family Health Initiative (July 29, 2025)

Program Information

We will share the story behind and lessons learned from the Filipino Family Health Initiative (FFHI), a community-based research study led by Dr. Joyce Javier, a pediatrician and Associate Professor at the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine. FFHI aims to promote emotional well-being among Filipino youth by implementing virtual evidence-based parenting interventions. A central component of FFHI is the "Incredible Years" program, a workshop designed to enhance parent-child relationships and promote children's social and academic success. We will also share videos of parent testimonials.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify protective and risk factors for depression and suicidal behavior among Filipinos, the third largest immigrant population in the U.S.
  • Describe factors that influence participation of Filipino parents in evidence-based parenting interventions.
  • Summarize strategies for implementing evidence-based parenting interventions using community engaged research among hardly reached populations
