Examining Inequities in Depression Care Across the Life Span (October 23, 2025)

Program Information

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most common and disabling psychiatric disorders in the USA. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are extremely important to prevent disability and improve quality of life. Depression affects persons across the lifespan. Dr. Taylor-Desir will review findings based on an extensive literature review of inequities in depression care in various cultural communities. Underdiagnosis of MDD in minoritized groups is due to multiple reasons including differences in socioeconomic status (SES), care affordability, cultural beliefs about depression , in addition to others. Dr. Taylor-Desir will discuss barriers to equitable depression care including stigma and mental health literacy in addition to ways to practice culturally responsive care to eliminate disparities.

  • Identify strategies to develop culturally responsive care to eliminate disparities in depression care
