Identifying Depression in Youth: Effective Screening Tools for Schools (October 6, 2025)

Program Information

This training will help school health providers, school mental health professionals, and school better understand depression in children and teens. Participants will learn about practical screening tools that can be used to screen for depression. The session will also explore ways to adapt screening to fit different school contexts—such as using digital tools, deciding when to screen individual students versus larger groups, and adapting approaches to meet the unique needs of students and school communities.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to do the following:

  • Describe the prevalence, risk factors, and common presentations of depression in school-aged children and adolescents.
  • Become familiar with validated depression screening tools appropriate for use in school settings, including their purpose, administration, and interpretation.
  • Explore strategies for adapting depression screening practices to different contexts, including the use of technology-based tools, considerations for individual versus school- or class-wide screening, and tailoring approaches to meet varying needs of students and school environments.
