Understanding Sizeism (April 17, 2024)

Program Information

Size has a visual component that people can make an immediate judgment about and size remains one of the most targeted identities. Join us as we explore the many facets of this controversial topic and the stigmas that surround body image and size. This program is designed for health care professionals. It addresses foundational work on understanding body size and addressing sizeism.

This activity will meet on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 from 2-4PM EST.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to do the following:

  1. Have a better understanding of Sizeism and its impact on their patient population
  2. Gain strategies for recognizing and pushing back against sizeism in their professional and personal lives
  3. Understand how to build more size inclusive spaces and practices
  4. Understand the negative impact of weight stigma on physician and mental health
  5. Discuss the complicated relationship between weight and health
  6. Recognize the socialized messaging we receive about body weight
  7. Understand how sizeism creates barriers to health care 
  8. Explore body weight as a social issue
  9. Create welcome and supportive environments that promote health over weight 
  10. Understand how sizeism impacts the health care industry
  11. Explore everyday microaggressions regarding size
