Jim Martinez
James Martinez is an accomplished and collaborative educational leader, consultant, advocate, and community servant with more than thirty-five years of experience in PreK–12 education and leadership. His professional background includes 24 years of administrative experience, 7 years of high school teaching, and 5 years of state-level consulting. Throughout his career, Jim has built a strong record of improving educational and operational systems through visionary leadership, collaborative problem-solving, and effective team-building.
Jim’s areas of expertise include special education, Universal Design for Learning, school counseling, social-emotional learning, Response to Intervention, Section 504, crisis response, family engagement, and college and career readiness. As a principal in Norwalk, Connecticut, he successfully piloted and implemented numerous district initiatives designed to improve instructional quality, strengthen school culture, and expand student and family supports. His accomplishments included establishing the district’s first school-based preschool program, creating a family resource center, and transforming the school library into an innovative Media Center and Learning Commons.
Before retiring from public education, Jim served as Education Administrator for School Counseling and Social Services PreK–12 for Norwalk Public Schools. In that role, he provided districtwide leadership for school counseling, social work, school psychology, student attendance and engagement, social-emotional learning, crisis response, Section 504, and coordination of care with local mental health providers and community partners. He also served as Interim Director of Specialized Instruction, Coordinator of the Districtwide Crisis Team, and District Coordinator of Section 504. His unwavering commitment to the well-being of students, staff, and families was recognized in 2022 when he was named National Latino Administrator of the Year by the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents.
Jim holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a Master’s degree in School Counseling, a second Master’s degree in School Administration and Supervision, and a Sixth-Year Degree in Educational Leadership with a Connecticut 093 Superintendent of Schools endorsement. He has also completed doctoral coursework in Educational Leadership and previously served as an elected member of the Monroe Public Schools Board of Education.
Jim currently serves as a Special Education Advocate, supporting students with disabilities and their families as they navigate the special education process. He is also an Executive Coach with the Connecticut Association of Schools, where he provides one-on-one coaching to school and district leaders focused on instructional leadership, organizational effectiveness, school culture, special education systems, reflective practice, and leadership development. In this role, Jim supports administrators as they navigate complex leadership challenges, strengthen team practices, and develop practical strategies that improve outcomes for students, staff, and families.
In addition, Jim serves as an Adjunct Lecturer at Lehman College, City University of New York’s Department of Counseling, Leadership, Literacy, and Special Education, and at Fairfield University’s School of Education and Human Development. He has also been appointed to the Board of Directors for Mid-Fairfield Community Care Center, serves as Board Chair of Higher Heights Youth Empowerment Program, LLC, serves on the Side by Side Charter School Executive Board, and facilitates the Norwalk ACTS Civic Engagement Program.
Bilingual in English and Spanish, Jim brings a culturally responsive, family-centered, and systems-focused perspective to his work. Across his professional and community roles, he remains committed to strengthening supports for children, families, educators, and communities.
