Joshua Tamayo-Sarver, MD, PhD, FACEP, FAMIA
Joshua Tamayo-Sarver, MD, PhD, FACEP, FAMIA is VP Innovation at Inflect Health and Vituity, overseeing strategic healthtech partnerships, investments, and internal incubation, with a core focus on health/wellness product development.
Dr. Tamayo-Sarver’s insights on addressing problem spaces in healthcare reflect his experiences as a practicing emergency physician, an executive at a national physician staffing company which also provides technology and analytical solutions to over 400 hospitals, and his work at Inflect, leading product development, testing, deployment, go-to-market strategy, and scaling of multiple technology solutions in the healthcare ecosystem. He also holds five US patents that range from HL7 connection systems, and machine learning algorithms, to a novel physician documentation system.
A guest lecturer at Stanford Business, Dr. Tamayo-Sarver has also spoken at American College of Healthcare Executives, Silicon Valley Global Innovation Summit, and Innovator MD, among many other health/healthtech conferences. Author of a much-discussed FastCompany editorial on potential uses of ChatGPT and other AI programs in a medical context, Dr. Tamayo-Sarver has also discussed his work on the health/healthtech podcasts, Becker’s, Bright Spots in Healthcare, MedBricks, and Inflect’s own podcast, For Startups, by Physicians.
Dr. Tamayo-Sarver has over 20 peer-reviewed publications, including publications in Pediatrics and American Journal of Public Health, and contributed a chapter entitled “Mitigating Value-Risk in Innovation“ to the book Advanced Health Technology (2023, Productivity Press).
Dr. Tamayo-Sarver has a bachelor's degree with honors in biochemistry from Harvard University, a certificate in negotiation from the School of Law at Harvard University, a medical degree from Case Western Reserve University, and a 10x10 certificate in medical informatics from Oregon Health Sciences University. He also holds a PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Case Western.
He completed his residency in emergency medicine at Harbor-University of California, Los Angeles, spent a year working as an EMT and health educator in El Salvador, and is board certified in Emergency Medicine and Clinical Informatics. He is a practicing staff physician in the Emergency Department at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, California, where he is the past Department Vice-Chair and Director of Quality Improvement.
