CHC SBHC Behavioral Health Kick-Off 2026: Breakout One

Session Information

Session 1: Curious, Compassionate, and Competent: Gender Affirming Care in Schools

Sarah Gilbert

Learning objectives: Through a blend of foundational knowledge, real-world examples, and open, non-shaming conversation, participants will:

  1. Define key concepts related to gender identity (including transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive identities) and use developmentally appropriate, affirming language with K–12 students.
  2. Apply at least 3 actionable strategies to support gender-expansive students in school-based clinical settings, with consideration for developmental stage (elementary, middle, and high school).

Session 2: At the PPT Table: Effective Advocacy for School-Based Therapists

Jill Chuckas

This training will equip school-based therapists with practical strategies to effectively support students within the school setting while navigating the complexities of special education systems. Presenters will explore how therapists can play a critical role in promoting students’ social-emotional well-being, collaborating with school staff, and ensuring that students’ needs are clearly represented and addressed. A key focus will be on strengthening therapists’ ability to advocate for their clients during PPT (Planning and Placement Team) meetings, including how to communicate clinical insights, contribute to IEP development, and support families in understanding and accessing appropriate services. Through real-world examples and guidance, participants will gain tools to enhance collaboration, manage challenges, and advocate confidently for equitable and student-centered outcomes.

Session 3: Why We Didn’t Tell You: Suicide Prevention

NAMI

After suicide or a suicide attempt, loved ones and professionals are often left asking painful question: Why didn’t they tell me? Why didn’t they ask for help? Why didn’t I know?
Why We Didn’t Tell You is a powerful, evidence-informed training that explores the emotional, interpersonal, and societal barriers that prevent people from disclosing suicidal thoughts. Grounded in lived experience, research, and survivor insight, this presentation challenges stigma and deepens understanding of the silence that often precedes suicide. Presenters, individuals with lived experience of suicidal ideation and attempts share findings from a survey of teen and adult survivors, offering rare and honest insight into why people chose not to disclose their struggles to family, clinicians, or others. Participants will leave with practical, trauma-informed strategies to foster trust, encourage openness, and reduce suicide risk.
