Conversations on Pain for Advanced Practice Residents (October 2024 - July 2025)

Program Information

Conversations on Pain for Advanced Practice Residents is a once-monthly videoconference that connects new primary care providers with a rotating team of multidisciplinary pain experts for in-depth, personalized learning to improve the care of patients experiencing pain. Residents will have the opportunity to connect in a small, virtual group setting with experts in physical medicine and rehabilitation, behavioral health, alternative medicine, and pharmacology.

 During each session, a pain expert will provide a focused didactic and then residents will have the opportunity to ask questions and share case challenges for discussion with the expert and peer residents from across the country. Topics in the 10-month didactic curriculum will include pain exams, psychological approaches to pain management, headaches, and safe opioid prescribing. Participants will have the opportunity to bring their case-based questions and challenges, as each session will provide a space for conversation with one or more of the expert team members.

This activity meets once monthly on every third Thursday from 12pm-1pm ET.

Target Audience

This activity is appropriate for advanced practice residents.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to do the following:

  • Identify patients who are at risk for developing chronic pain
  • Assess how and when to utilize non-pharmaceutical techniques for pain management
  • Determine how and when to prescribe pain medications including opioids
  • Assess the benefits of behavioral health involvement in pain management
